The Awana Grand Prix is Back – Get in the Race with Us!

30 Jan 2024, by Angie Mullen in Newsletter

It’s been three years since the Fellowship Hall has been filled with cheering race fans, wooden cars speeding down the track at speeds up to 175 mph and their owners, who carefully crafted them, hoping for a first place finish.  The 2020 Awana Grand Prix was the last event our club hosted before Covid canceled so many things.  The kids have been asking when we are racing again.  The answer is NOW!  And we want YOU, church family, to “get in the race” with us!

What is a Grand Prix?

The Awana Grand Prix is a racing event with a track record of fun and excitement. Each year thousands of young people and their families attend a local race where they will hear the gospel message. During the event clubbers race small wooden cars that they’ve crafted with the help of a parent or other adult.  We have been holding this event as part of our Awana ministry here in Milton since 2011.

The goals of such an event are to encourage adults to spend time crafting these wooden cars and then to have those adults attend the race with their children.  At the conclusion of the racing, a clear gospel message is presented to the room full of spectators as the race results are being determined.

All of this is to happen in a place where friendly competition results in a positive, fun experience with Godly attitudes and sportsmanship.  Trophies are awarded in each class for speed and best design.

On Sunday, March 3 racing will begin at 2:00 pm.  We invite anyone associated with Awana, past or present, or our church family to join in the fun and fellowship by entering the Open Class.  Simply pick up an order form from the Welcome Center or order a car kit from Angie Mullen/contact the church office (donations of $6.00 per car are appreciated).  Cars must be from our kits for this race.  Use the kit to create your own race car and bring it on March 3rd for the race.  (Speed contestants must be present to win.)

But I don’t have any idea how to make a car

We have a solution for that!  On Sunday, Feb. 25, Race Director Rich Gallegos and his experienced crew will be here to help you during our Grand Prix Workshop.  Come from 12:00-2:00 pm to start your car from scratch or bring your car in whatever stage you have it in.  We will have people here who can help you get it race ready.

You can also bring your completed car just to give it a test run down the track and to check it for the correct size and weight.  If you are willing to give it a try, we are here to help you create a car that will reach the finish line.

So give it a try!

Come join the fun of the Awana Grand Prix.  It sure would be exciting to have a robust Open Class competition.  And it would be even more exciting to have a Fellowship Hall filled with people cheering on our Awana clubbers in their races.

Race Director Rich Gallegos will be contacting people who are not related to car owners in the race to help with our design category judging.  If you’re not interested in creating a car, you could support this event by helping with this important job.

And if you can’t make the event at all, please support us by praying that the event will be used by God to touch hearts of those who haven’t yet made the decision to follow Christ and that the afternoon will permeate God’s love and grace.
