“And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.”
– Colossians 1:17

From a cosmic perspective the daily reality of our world is illogical. The default mindset for human beings is to deny or disregard God’s contribution to the universe, namely that He is its Creator. He came first, before anything that can be seen and all those things that cannot. By His word light, space, time, stars, planets, air, plants, animals, beauty, joy, people, everything came to exist. Nothing exists which did not find its origins in the Almighty. Yet the world turns and people go about their lives blissfully (or not as the case may be) ignorant of God’s part in turning this whole thing on or ignorant of just who exactly He is.

But wait there’s more. Even with a biblical understanding of God as Creator, however, humans can miss the fact that He is more than a force or a power. He is personal. It is not just His power that holds all things together. It is His character and nature. The saying goes, “Love makes the world go round.” In truth, Love holds all things together. Love is not first and foremost a concept. He is a person. God is love, and it is by His core nature of love that things hold together.

It is God therefore in his person and power that holds all things together. He holds us together. Without his ongoing presence in this world and in our lives, we would fall apart. He is both our Creator and our Sustainer. It is foolish to think otherwise. As the Psalm says, “The fool says in his heart ‘there is no God.’” (Psalm 14:1) It is also foolish to say that God exists but to live like He’s incompetent and ignorant. Yet, this is sadly our tendency as humans. This is why it is so important that we grow in faith. As we learn to trust the Lord more and more, we begin to see that he does hold us and everything else together. No one else could, and He is more than capable of running the universe and everything concerning our lives.
